What is Self-Esteem
Self-esteem relates to how one feels, thinks, and values themselves. Self-esteem can change during our life due to the changing variety of experiences that occur during life. These events include hurts, triumphs, failures, successes, losses, and gains. Having low-self-esteem can feel like having a personal critic following you everywhere you go. This voice can be quite convincing. The messages from this critic can be hurtful and increase feelings of low-self-esteem. Despite other people’s opinions, positive feedback, or praise, the critic will convince you that positive things others say about you are not real or true. Having healthy self-esteem does not mean that you will never experience negative thoughts or opinions about yourself. However, high-self-esteem is a genuine appreciation for yourself just as you are. It also means thinking about the not so pleasant things about ourselves in ways that are helpful. To go from an unhealthy view of yourself to a healthy view of yourself is achievable.
Self-Esteem Counseling and Depression
Self-Esteem is a common symptom of depression. Although, you do not have to have depression to experience low self-esteem. Depression impacts the way we view the world, others, and ourselves. What makes depression with low-self esteem so tricky is, sometimes you do not feel you have the strength to change it. Depression can weigh you down and convince you that you are not good enough, smart enough, or relevant. You do not need to live with depression symptoms.
Impact of Self-Esteem and Procrastination
Do you often second guess yourself? Been having a difficult time starting an important project? If so, you may have an issue with procrastination. Procrastination is when you avoid completing tasks because it seems unpleasant. Low-self-esteem coupled with procrastination can make someone feel that they are not able to handle even small tasks. Core beliefs of inadequacy strengthen avoidance, often making people feel stuck or incapable. We can help you get out of the rut of procrastination.
Imposter / Impostor Syndrome and Self-Esteem
Do you struggle with feeling satisfied when accomplishing something? Do you find it almost impossible to accept a compliment? You may be dealing with a common issue called imposter/impostor syndrome. Imposter syndrome is closely related to procrastination. While both can become bigger problems because of feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt; imposter syndrome is different, because you finish things. The problem is that when the task or goal is achieved, you have thoughts and feelings that seem like you do not match with the experience of accomplishing or succeeding. You feel like a fake or a fraud. For example, you may graduate from a difficult engineering program. Someone struggling with imposter syndrome may tell themselves “it’s no big deal, they made the classes easier so that anyone could graduate, so I’m not a ‘real’ engineer.” Imposter syndrome can rob you from truly experiencing the joy that comes from success and growth.
